Florida International's basketball program began in 1972 at the public university in Miami. The Panthers compete in Conference USA and have made occasional NCAA and NIT appearances. The program has steadily grown alongside one of the largest universities in Florida.
The Panthers nickname references the Florida panther, an endangered big cat native to South Florida and the official state animal of Florida.
Isiah Thomas (not the NBA legend) leading FIU to a competitive Sun Belt Conference era, building the program's credibility.
FIU's campus in University Park, Miami, is one of the largest in the country, and the university's enrollment exceeds 55,000 students, making it one of the biggest schools in Division I.
The Florida International Panthers compete in the CUSA and hold an all-time record of 452–700 (.392 winning percentage) across 39 recorded seasons dating back to 1987-88.
