Jacksonville State University in Alabama has competed in several conferences and currently plays in Conference USA. The Gamecocks have built a solid mid-major program with conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2017 out of the Ohio Valley Conference and in 2022 out of the ASUN.
The Gamecocks nickname was adopted in the 1940s, inspired by the fighting spirit of the gamecock, a symbol of toughness and tenacity.
Winning the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament to earn the program's first NCAA Tournament berth, putting Jacksonville State on the national stage for the first time.
Jacksonville State moved from the OVC to the ASUN in 2021 and then to Conference USA in 2023 — two conference changes in just three years, a remarkably rapid stretch of league-hopping in college sports.
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks compete in the CUSA and hold an all-time record of 425–509 (.455 winning percentage) across 31 recorded seasons dating back to 1995-96.
