Florida State Seminoles basketball — program history

Florida State's basketball program began in 1947 in Tallahassee and the Seminoles compete in the ACC. The program reached its peak under Leonard Hamilton, who built FSU into a consistent NCAA Tournament team and reached the Elite Eight multiple times. The Seminoles made the 1972 national championship game under Hugh Durham.

The name

The Seminoles nickname honors the Seminole Tribe of Florida, with whom the university maintains a formal, ongoing relationship — the tribe has endorsed the use of its name and imagery.

Florida State's tradition of Chief Osceola riding an Appaloosa horse named Renegade and planting a flaming spear at midfield is one of the most iconic traditions in college sports, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida has formally approved it.

The Florida State Seminoles compete in the ACC and hold an all-time record of 1202–854 (.585 winning percentage) across 70 recorded seasons dating back to 1956-57. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
