Stanford's men's basketball program dates to 1914, and the Cardinal have combined academic prestige with athletic success on the hardwood. The program enjoyed its best modern era under Mike Montgomery in the 1990s and 2000s, reaching the Final Four in 1998.
Stanford's "Cardinal" refers to the color cardinal red, not the bird — the singular form is intentional, adopted officially in 1981 after years of mascot debate.
Reaching the 1998 Final Four behind stars Arthur Lee and Mark Madsen, Stanford's first Final Four appearance since 1942.
Stanford's unofficial mascot is the Stanford Tree, a member of the band who designs a new tree costume each year — it has been called the most bizarre mascot in college sports.
The Stanford Cardinal compete in the ACC and hold an all-time record of 1648–1267 (.565 winning percentage) across 109 recorded seasons dating back to 1913-14. The program has won 1 NCAA national championship (1942) and reached 2 Final Fours.
