SMU's basketball program began in 1917 at the Dallas-based university founded in 1911. The 'Mustangs' name was adopted in 1917, inspired by the wild horses of the American Southwest. SMU was a founding member of the Southwest Conference and won multiple SWC titles before the conference dissolved. The program has experienced a resurgence in recent years, joining the ACC in 2024 after successful runs in the American Athletic Conference. Moody Coliseum has been the Mustangs' home court since 1956.
