Virginia Tech's basketball program dates to 1909, and the Hokies have been an ACC member since 2004. The program reached new heights under Buzz Williams and then Mike Young, becoming a consistent NCAA Tournament team.
The "Hokie" is a made-up word from an 1896 spirit yell written by O.M. Stull. The HokieBird mascot is a turkey-like creature representing the university's agricultural heritage.
Reaching the 2019 Sweet Sixteen and winning the program's first ACC Tournament title in 2022, establishing Virginia Tech as a legitimate ACC basketball contender.
Nobody knows exactly what a "Hokie" is — the word was invented for a school cheer in 1896 and has no actual meaning, making it one of the most unique mascot names in college sports.
The Virginia Tech Hokies compete in the ACC and hold an all-time record of 1588–1318 (.546 winning percentage) across 118 recorded seasons dating back to 1908-09.
