High Point Panthers basketball — program history

High Point's basketball program began in 1924 at the private university in High Point, North Carolina. The Panthers compete in the Big South Conference and have been building competitiveness under significant investment from the university. The program transitioned to Division I in 1999.

The name

The Panthers nickname was chosen to represent the fierce, powerful big cat, giving the university a strong and distinctive athletic identity.

Signature moment

Tubby Smith's hiring as head coach in 2018, bringing a national championship-winning coach to the mid-major program and signaling High Point's ambitions.

High Point's Qubein Arena and Conference Center opened in 2021 and is one of the most impressive facilities in all of mid-major basketball, made possible by university president Nido Qubein's ambitious vision.

The High Point Panthers compete in the Big South and hold an all-time record of 429–404 (.515 winning percentage) across 27 recorded seasons dating back to 1999-00.
