Radford's men's basketball program dates to 1974, and the Virginia school is a charter member of the Big South Conference. The Highlanders have been a steady Big South competitor, occasionally earning NCAA Tournament bids.
The Highlanders name reflects Radford's location in the New River Valley of the Virginia highlands, surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains.
Winning the 2018 Big South Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament bid, the program's first trip to March Madness since 2009.
Radford University was originally a women's college (Radford State Teachers College for Women) and didn't become coeducational until 1972 — men's basketball is a relatively modern addition.
The Radford Highlanders compete in the Big South and hold an all-time record of 665–608 (.522 winning percentage) across 42 recorded seasons dating back to 1984-85.
