UNC Asheville's basketball program dates to 1961, and the mountain school competes in the Big South Conference. The Bulldogs have been a competitive presence in their conference, earning several NCAA Tournament bids.

Winning the 2012 Big South Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament bid, where the Bulldogs faced Syracuse as a 16-seed and played competitively.
