Long Island University merged its Brooklyn and Post campuses into one unified Division I program competing in the Northeast Conference. The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds had a storied early history, winning two NIT championships in 1939 and 1941 when the NIT was the premier postseason tournament.
The Sharks mascot was adopted when LIU unified its two campuses in 2019, chosen to represent Long Island's connection to the Atlantic Ocean.
Winning the 1939 NIT Championship — at a time when the NIT was considered the most prestigious postseason tournament in college basketball.
LIU Brooklyn's 1930s and 1940s teams were among the best in the nation, but the program was implicated in the 1951 point-shaving scandal that rocked college basketball.
The Long Island University Sharks compete in the NEC and hold an all-time record of 1203–990 (.549 winning percentage) across 84 recorded seasons dating back to 1928-29.
