UMass basketball reached its zenith under John Calipari in the 1990s, reaching the 1996 Final Four with Marcus Camby. The Minutemen compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference and have a passionate fan base at the Mullins Center in Amherst. The program has also produced NBA player Julius Erving, who played at UMass before becoming "Dr. J."
The Minutemen name honors the colonial Minutemen of the American Revolution, reflecting Massachusetts' central role in the founding of the United States.
