Toledo Rockets basketball — program history

Toledo's basketball program dates to 1915, and the Rockets have been one of the most successful programs in the Mid-American Conference. Toledo has won multiple MAC titles and made several NCAA Tournament appearances.

The name

The Rockets name was adopted in 1923 after a sportswriter described the football team as "starting off like rockets." The space-age name has endured for over a century.

Signature moment

The 1979 season under coach Bob Nichols, when the Rockets won the MAC and reached the NCAA Tournament, part of a stretch of consistent MAC success.

Toledo's Savage Arena is one of the MAC's most raucous venues, and the Rockets have produced NBA players including Steve Mix and Larry Jones.

The Toledo Rockets compete in the MAC and hold an all-time record of 1602–1164 (.579 winning percentage) across 109 recorded seasons dating back to 1915-16.
