Southern Indiana's basketball program began in 1968, and the Evansville-based school made the historic move from Division II to Division I in 2022. The Screaming Eagles were a D-II powerhouse, winning the 1995 national championship and finishing national runner-up in 1994 and 2004.
The Screaming Eagles nickname was chosen by students, inspired by the bald eagle and the 101st Airborne Division (the "Screaming Eagles") based at nearby Fort Campbell.
