Bellarmine's basketball program dates to 1950 at the Catholic university in Louisville, Kentucky. The Knights were a Division II powerhouse, winning the 2011 national championship, before transitioning to Division I in 2020. They joined the ASUN Conference and quickly became competitive at the D-I level.
The Knights nickname honors the medieval tradition of chivalry and reflects the university's Catholic heritage, named after Saint Robert Bellarmine.
