Binghamton's basketball program began in 1946 at the State University of New York campus in upstate New York. The Bearcats compete in the America East Conference and made a dramatic rise to prominence in the late 2000s under coach Kevin Broadus. The program earned its first NCAA Tournament bid in 2009.
The Bearcats nickname was chosen in 1999 as the school moved to Division I, combining the ferocity of a bear with the agility of a cat to create a unique mascot identity.
Winning the 2009 America East Tournament to earn the program's first and only NCAA Tournament appearance, a landmark moment for the university.
Binghamton's campus is located in Vestal, New York — not actually in the city of Binghamton — and the Events Center is known for its intimate, loud atmosphere despite modest seating capacity.
