Detroit Mercy's basketball program dates to 1905 at the Jesuit university in Detroit. The Titans compete in the Horizon League and have a rich basketball tradition, including producing multiple NBA players. The program was especially strong in the 1960s-70s under coaches Bob Calihan and Dick Vitale.
The Titans nickname replaced the school's original Tigers moniker in 1924, adopted to avoid confusion with baseball's Detroit Tigers and to evoke the mighty giants of Greek mythology.
Dick Vitale coaching the Titans to a 25-4 record and a Sweet 16 run in 1977 before being hired by the Detroit Pistons, launching his path to becoming America's most famous basketball broadcaster.
Dick Vitale, the legendary ESPN broadcaster known for his 'Awesome, baby!' catchphrase, was the head coach at Detroit from 1973 to 1977 before his brief NBA coaching stint.
The Detroit Mercy Titans compete in the Horizon League and hold an all-time record of 1490–1371 (.521 winning percentage) across 117 recorded seasons dating back to 1909-10.
