Florida Gulf Coast Eagles basketball — program history

Florida Gulf Coast's basketball program began in 2002 at the young university in Fort Myers, Florida. FGCU became a national sensation in 2013 with 'Dunk City,' one of the most electrifying NCAA Tournament debuts in history. The Eagles compete in the ASUN Conference.

The name

The Eagles nickname was chosen to represent the bald eagles and other birds of prey common in Southwest Florida's coastal ecosystem.

Signature moment

The 2013 'Dunk City' NCAA Tournament run as a 15-seed, defeating Georgetown and San Diego State with a high-flying, alley-oop-heavy style that captivated the nation.

FGCU's 2013 NCAA Tournament debut was so electrifying that 'Dunk City' became a nationally trademarked phrase, and the Eagles became the first 15-seed to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles compete in the ASUN and hold an all-time record of 316–294 (.518 winning percentage) across 19 recorded seasons dating back to 2007-08.
