Jacksonville University burst onto the national scene in 1970 when the Dolphins reached the NCAA Championship Game behind 7-foot-2 center Artis Gilmore. The private university in Jacksonville, Florida, competes in the ASUN Conference and has never quite replicated that magical 1970 run.
The Dolphins mascot was adopted to reflect Jacksonville's coastal location along the St. Johns River and its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
The 1970 Cinderella run to the NCAA Championship Game, where Artis Gilmore and the Dolphins stunned the basketball world before falling to UCLA in the final.
Artis Gilmore averaged 26.5 points and a nation-leading 22.2 rebounds per game during the 1969-70 season, one of the greatest individual seasons in college basketball history.
