The United States Naval Academy competes in the Patriot League and has a proud basketball tradition, including a 1986 Elite Eight appearance led by David Robinson. Navy's players must fulfill a five-year military service commitment after graduation, making their athletic achievements even more remarkable.
The Midshipmen name comes from the rank of students at the Naval Academy, who are called midshipmen as they train to become officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
David Robinson leading Navy to the 1986 Elite Eight, averaging 22.7 points and a nation-leading 13.0 rebounds that season, before being drafted #1 overall by the San Antonio Spurs.
David Robinson had to wait two years after being drafted to play in the NBA due to his military service obligation, yet he still became one of the greatest centers in basketball history.
