NJIT Highlanders basketball — program history
The New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark competes in the America East Conference and transitioned to Division I in 2006. The Highlanders spent years as an independent before joining the ASUN and then America East, building their program along the way.
The name
The Highlanders mascot references the New Jersey Highlands region, combined with a Scottish warrior theme that represents strength and determination.
Signature moment
The December 2014 upset of No. 17 Michigan at Crisler Center, a stunning 72-70 road victory that put the then-independent NJIT program on the national map.
NJIT spent two seasons (2013-15) as the nation's lone Division I independent — the only school in the country without a conference — before finally joining the ASUN in 2015.
The NJIT Highlanders compete in the America East and hold an all-time record of 226–378 (.374 winning percentage) across 20 recorded seasons dating back to 2006-07.
