UMass Lowell River Hawks basketball — program history

UMass Lowell's basketball program traces its roots to 1958, and the school began its Division I transition in 2013, completing it in 2017. The River Hawks compete in the America East Conference and have been building their D-I identity.

The name

The River Hawks name was adopted in 1994, replacing the retired Chiefs nickname, with the winning 'Hawks' entry altered to River Hawks to tie the school to the Merrimack River that runs through Lowell.

Signature moment

Becoming eligible for the America East Conference Tournament and postseason play for the first time in 2017, completing their D-I transition.

UMass Lowell's Tsongas Center, the River Hawks' home arena, is also a professional hockey venue and concert hall, giving the basketball program a larger arena than many mid-major schools.

The UMass Lowell River Hawks compete in the America East and hold an all-time record of 206–207 (.499 winning percentage) across 14 recorded seasons dating back to 1905-06.
