Utah Valley's basketball program dates to 1941, and the Orem school moved to Division I in 2009. The Wolverines compete in the WAC and have been building their program in the scenic Utah Valley region.
The Wolverines name dates to the school's early decades, chosen by a student vote and championed by longtime president Wilson W. Sorenson, who likened the small school to the wolverine — a fierce predator that punches above its size. The mascot, Willy the Wolverine, is named in Sorenson's honor.
Charging to the 2023 NIT semifinals with wins over New Mexico, Colorado, and Cincinnati during a school-record 28-win season, establishing UVU as a legitimate Division I program.
