VMI's basketball program dates to 1908, and the Lexington, Virginia military school competes in the Southern Conference. The Keydets face unique challenges as a military institute but have had occasional competitive seasons.
The "Keydets" name is a phonetic spelling of "cadets," reflecting VMI's status as a senior military college where all students are cadets in the Corps of Cadets.
The 1976 season, when VMI won the Southern Conference tournament and upset Tennessee and DePaul in the NCAA Tournament to reach the Elite Eight under coach Bill Blair.
VMI's 2006-07 team led the nation in scoring at 100.9 points per game, making them the highest-scoring team in the country that year — a remarkable feat for a military school with rigorous cadet obligations.
The VMI Keydets compete in the Southern and hold an all-time record of 967–1683 (.365 winning percentage) across 118 recorded seasons dating back to 1908-09.
