West Virginia's basketball program dates to 1903 and the 'Mountaineers' name reflects the rugged Appalachian terrain of the state. WVU's greatest basketball achievement was reaching the 2010 Final Four under Bob Huggins, a proud West Virginia native who returned home after coaching at Cincinnati. Jerry West, widely considered one of the greatest basketball players ever, played at WVU from 1957-1960 and led the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA Championship game. His silhouette became the inspiration for the NBA logo.
