Fairfield's basketball program began in 1948 at the Jesuit university in Fairfield, Connecticut. The Stags compete in the MAAC and have made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. The program has been a consistent MAAC contender over the decades.
The Stags nickname represents the male deer, chosen to symbolize grace, speed, and strength — fitting the school's competitive aspirations.
Winning the 1997 MAAC Tournament championship despite an 11-18 record, then taking a second-half lead on No. 1 seed North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament before falling 82-74, nearly becoming the first 16 seed to win a tournament game.
Fairfield's campus is located in one of the wealthiest counties in America — Fairfield County, Connecticut — and Alumni Hall provides an intimate setting for MAAC basketball.
