Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, has built a reputation as a mid-major powerhouse in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The program saw sustained success under Tim Cluess and later Rick Pitino, who coached at Iona from 2020-2023 and led the Gaels to two NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Gaels name refers to the Gaelic heritage of the Irish Christian Brothers who founded Iona College in 1940, honoring their Celtic roots.
Rick Pitino coaching Iona to the 2023 NCAA Tournament, where the 13th-seeded Gaels led eventual national champion UConn at halftime in the first round, proving the Hall of Famer could still compete at the highest level.
Iona has won more MAAC Tournament championships than any other school, making the Gaels the conference's most dominant postseason program.
The Iona Gaels compete in the MAAC and hold an all-time record of 1150–884 (.565 winning percentage) across 73 recorded seasons dating back to 1953-54.
