Boston College's basketball program dates to 1904 at the Jesuit university in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The Eagles compete in the ACC and have made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including Elite Eight runs. BC has produced NBA players like Jared Dudley and Reggie Jackson.
The Eagles nickname was adopted in 1920 after Rev. Edward McLaughlin, upset by a newspaper cartoon depicting BC's champion track team as a cat, wrote to the student newspaper The Heights proposing the eagle as a symbol of majesty, power, and freedom — a bird whose natural habitat is the high places.
Troy Bell leading the Eagles to the 2001 Big East Tournament title and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, then pouring in 32 points against USC in a narrow second-round loss in one of the program's most memorable NCAA Tournament performances.
Boston College's Conte Forum is located on a hilltop in Chestnut Hill with a view of the Boston skyline, and the arena doubles as the home for BC's hockey team, another perennial power.
