Delaware's basketball program started in 1908 and the Blue Hens compete in the CAA. The program has made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and has been a competitive force in mid-major basketball. Delaware has produced several professional players over the decades.
The Blue Hens nickname dates to the Revolutionary War, when a Delaware regiment brought Blue Hen chickens to cockfights between battles — the fighting blue hen became the state bird in 1939.
Reaching the 2014 NCAA Tournament and giving Michigan State a competitive game in the second round, the program's most prominent national appearance.
Delaware's mascot, YoUDee, has won the UCA National Mascot Championship multiple times, making it one of the most decorated mascots in all of college sports.
The Delaware Blue Hens compete in the CUSA and hold an all-time record of 1044–1060 (.496 winning percentage) across 85 recorded seasons dating back to 1905-06.
