Fresno State's basketball program began in 1921 in Fresno, California. The Bulldogs compete in the Mountain West Conference and enjoyed their greatest success under coaches Boyd Grant and Jerry Tarkanian. The program has made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Bulldogs nickname was adopted in the 1920s, representing tenacity and determination — a common mascot choice that has served the California Central Valley school well.
