George Mason's basketball program began in 1966 in Fairfax, Virginia. The Patriots compete in the Atlantic 10 and are best known for one of the greatest Cinderella runs in NCAA Tournament history. The program has been a competitive mid-major force.
The Patriots nickname honors George Mason, one of America's Founding Fathers and the 'Father of the Bill of Rights,' for whom the university is named.
The 2006 Final Four run as an 11-seed under coach Jim Larranaga, defeating Michigan State, North Carolina, and Wichita State — one of the greatest Cinderella stories ever.
George Mason's 2006 Final Four run was so improbable that the team was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and coach Jim Larranaga was later hired by Miami (FL) on the strength of that run.
