Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, has grown from a small Baptist college into a major athletic program competing in Conference USA. The Flames transitioned to Division I in 1988 and have made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including a memorable 2019 first-round upset.
The Flames name represents the "fire" of faith and liberty, reflecting the evangelical Christian mission of the university founded by Jerry Falwell Sr. in 1971.
The 2019 NCAA Tournament first-round upset of #5 seed Mississippi State, 80-76, the program's first NCAA Tournament win in school history.
Liberty's Vines Center was one of the largest on-campus arenas in college basketball when it opened in 1990, with a capacity exceeding 9,000.
The Liberty Flames compete in the CUSA and hold an all-time record of 627–560 (.528 winning percentage) across 37 recorded seasons dating back to 1988-89.
