Miami's basketball program launched in 1926, just a year after the university's founding. The 'Hurricanes' name was chosen after a devastating 1926 hurricane postponed the opening football game — players suggested the name hoping they would 'sweep away opponents' like the storm. The program was actually shut down from 1971-1985 due to poor facilities and attendance, but was revived and has since become a competitive ACC member. Sebastian the Ibis serves as mascot — chosen because the ibis is the last bird to flee an approaching hurricane and the first to reappear.

The 2023 Final Four run under Jim Larrañaga, when the fifth-seeded Hurricanes knocked off top-seeded Houston and second-seeded Texas to reach the first Final Four in program history
In 1989, mascot Sebastian the Ibis was tackled and handcuffed by police after trying to extinguish Florida State's flaming spear with a fire extinguisher while wearing a fireman's helmet
The Miami (FL) Hurricanes compete in the ACC and hold an all-time record of 1052–789 (.571 winning percentage) across 64 recorded seasons dating back to 1948-49. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
