San Jose State's basketball program dates to 1912 in the heart of Silicon Valley. The Spartans compete in the Mountain West Conference and historically have been more renowned for their football (with Bill Walsh connections) than basketball, though the program has had competitive stretches.
The Spartans name was adopted in 1924 after students voted to replace the previous "Normalites" nickname, selecting Spartans for the warriors' courage and toughness.
Winning the 1996 Big West Conference Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, one of the program's rare March Madness appearances.
San Jose State is located in downtown San Jose, making it one of the few Division I basketball programs situated in the middle of a major city's urban core — right in the heart of Silicon Valley.
The San Jose State Spartans compete in the MWC and hold an all-time record of 828–1279 (.393 winning percentage) across 76 recorded seasons dating back to 1937-38.
