Tennessee State's basketball program dates to 1912, and the Nashville HBCU has a proud basketball tradition. The Tigers won three consecutive NAIA National Championships from 1957-1959 under the legendary coach John McLendon, who was later succeeded by Harold Hunter.
The Tigers name was adopted as a symbol of ferocity and pride for the historically Black university in Nashville.

Tennessee State's Dick Barnett went on to win two NBA championships with the New York Knicks, and the school's NAIA dynasty of the late 1950s is one of the great runs in college basketball history.
