Winthrop's basketball program dates to 1977, and the Rock Hill, South Carolina school has been one of the Big South Conference's dominant programs. The Eagles have won numerous Big South titles and made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Eagles name was adopted to represent strength, vision, and the soaring aspirations of the university's athletics program.
The program's remarkable run of Big South titles, including seven regular-season championships and eight tournament crowns in the ten years from 1999-2008 under coaches Gregg Marshall and Randy Peele.
Gregg Marshall began building his coaching reputation at Winthrop before moving to Wichita State — he went 194-83 in nine seasons with the Eagles and won seven Big South tournament titles.
The Winthrop Eagles compete in the Big South and hold an all-time record of 683–534 (.561 winning percentage) across 41 recorded seasons dating back to 1985-86.
