Appalachian State's basketball program began in 1919 in Boone, North Carolina, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Mountaineers compete in the Sun Belt Conference and have won multiple conference titles. The program has made several NCAA Tournament appearances throughout its history.
The Mountaineers nickname is a natural fit for a university located at over 3,300 feet elevation in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina.
