Southern Miss's basketball program dates to 1912, and the Hattiesburg school competes in the Sun Belt Conference. The Golden Eagles have had competitive stretches and produced NBA talent over the decades.
The Golden Eagles name was adopted in 1972, replacing "Southerners." The golden eagle, a powerful bird of prey, represents strength and pride.
Winning the 1987 NIT championship with an 84-80 victory over La Salle at Madison Square Garden, the program's signature postseason moment.
Southern Miss produced NBA player Clarence Weatherspoon, who played 13 seasons in the league and remains the school's most prominent basketball alumnus.
