Georgia State's basketball program began in 1963 in downtown Atlanta. The Panthers compete in the Sun Belt Conference and have made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. The program gained national attention with several March Madness upsets.
The Panthers nickname was adopted to represent the fierce, agile big cat, giving the urban university in downtown Atlanta a strong athletic identity.
R.J. Hunter's game-winning three-pointer to upset third-seeded Baylor 57-56 in the 2015 NCAA Tournament first round, and his father Ron Hunter falling off his stool in celebration.
Georgia State men's basketball called the on-campus GSU Sports Arena home for nearly 50 years (1973-2022) before moving into the new 7,300-seat Georgia State Convocation Center near the former Turner Field for the 2022-23 season.
