UL Monroe's basketball program dates to 1951, and the northeast Louisiana school competes in the Sun Belt Conference. The Warhawks have had periods of success, including an NIT appearance and several conference tournament runs.
The Warhawks name was adopted in 2006, replacing "Indians." The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter plane, which trained at nearby Selman Field during WWII, inspired the choice.
The program's seven NCAA Tournament appearances as Northeast Louisiana between 1982 and 1996, including four straight trips from 1990 to 1993 that marked the peak of the program's history.
UL Monroe's previous name, Northeast Louisiana, produced NFL quarterbacks Stan Humphries and Bubby Brister and is located in Monroe, Louisiana — the birthplace of Delta Air Lines.
The UL Monroe Warhawks compete in the Sun Belt and hold an all-time record of 775–794 (.494 winning percentage) across 53 recorded seasons dating back to 1973-74.
