Iowa's basketball program became varsity in 1901 and joined the Big Ten in 1908. The 'Hawkeye' name comes from James Fenimore Cooper's novel 'The Last of the Mohicans' and was adopted as Iowa's state nickname in 1838. The Hawkeyes reached the NCAA Championship game in 1956, falling to Bill Russell's undefeated San Francisco team. Carver-Hawkeye Arena, known as 'The House That Lute Built' after coach Lute Olson championed its construction, opened in 1983 with an innovative sunken design that places most seating below ground level.
