Ohio State Buckeyes basketball — program history

Ohio State's basketball program formed in 1898 and appeared in the very first NCAA Championship game in 1939, losing to Oregon. The 'Buckeye' name comes from the Ohio state tree; the mascot Brutus Buckeye — a student wearing a giant buckeye nut head — debuted in 1965. The Buckeyes won their lone national championship in 1960, led by future Hall of Famers Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek. A little-known fact: future Indiana coaching legend Bob Knight was a reserve on that championship team.

The name

Named after the Ohio buckeye tree, the state tree of Ohio; 'Buckeye' has referred to Ohio residents since 1788 and was formally adopted as the school nickname in 1950

Signature moment

The 1960 NCAA Championship, led by Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek, defeating California 75-55 for Ohio State's only basketball title

Future Indiana coaching legend Bob Knight was a reserve player on Ohio State's 1960 championship team, sitting behind Hall of Famers Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek

The Ohio State Buckeyes compete in the Big Ten and hold an all-time record of 1824–1212 (.601 winning percentage) across 121 recorded seasons dating back to 1898-99. The program has won 1 NCAA national championship (1960) and reached 9 Final Fours.
