Michigan State's basketball program dates to 1899, and the 'Spartans' name was chosen in honor of the ancient Greek warriors of Sparta renowned for their bravery. The program reached iconic status in 1979 when Earvin 'Magic' Johnson led the Spartans to the NCAA Championship in the most-watched college basketball game ever, defeating Larry Bird's Indiana State Sycamores. Under Tom Izzo, who arrived in 1995, Michigan State has reached eight Final Fours — ten in program history — and won a second national title in 2000.
