Dayton's basketball program dates to 1903 at the Catholic university founded by the Society of Mary in 1850. The 'Flyers' nickname honors the Wright Brothers, who conducted their aviation experiments in Dayton, Ohio. The program won the 1962 NIT Championship and reached the NCAA Championship game in 1967. Dayton is also known as the permanent host of the NCAA Tournament's First Four games at UD Arena, and the passionate Flyer faithful have helped create one of the most electric atmospheres in college basketball.

Dayton has hosted the NCAA Tournament's opening games every year the tournament has been played since 2001 except 2021 — first the single play-in game and, since 2011, the four-game First Four — making UD Arena one of the most important venues in March Madness history
The Dayton Flyers compete in the A-10 and hold an all-time record of 1806–1183 (.604 winning percentage) across 120 recorded seasons dating back to 1903-04. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
