The University of North Texas in Denton competes in the American Athletic Conference and has a basketball tradition that includes a 1988 Southland Conference tournament title. The Mean Green have produced NBA players and continue to build their program under conference realignment.
The "Mean Green" nickname originated in the 1960s as a description of the football defense, and it stuck as the primary athletic identity, replacing the previous "Eagles" mascot.
The 2021 NCAA Tournament appearance, when #13 seed North Texas upset #4 seed Purdue in overtime in the first round, giving the Mean Green their first tournament victory in school history.
North Texas's Super Pit arena holds over 10,000 fans and is one of the largest on-campus basketball venues in the American Athletic Conference.
The North Texas Mean Green compete in the AAC and hold an all-time record of 940–1054 (.471 winning percentage) across 71 recorded seasons dating back to 1921-22.
