Pittsburgh competes in the ACC and has a strong basketball tradition, particularly under coaches Doc Carlson and Jamie Dixon. The Panthers won the 1928 and 1930 national championships (Helms Foundation) and have made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight run in 2009.
The Panthers mascot was adopted in 1909, chosen through a student contest for its ferocity and aggressiveness, and the panther has been Pitt's symbol for over a century.
The 2009 season under Jamie Dixon, when #1 seed Pitt reached the Elite Eight before falling to Villanova, one of the program's strongest modern seasons.
Pitt's Petersen Events Center replaced the legendary Fitzgerald Fieldhouse and has become one of the better home-court advantages in the ACC since its 2002 opening.
The Pittsburgh Panthers compete in the ACC and hold an all-time record of 1728–1279 (.575 winning percentage) across 118 recorded seasons dating back to 1905-06. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
