Sacred Heart's basketball program dates to 1963, and the Fairfield, Connecticut school made the jump to Division I in 1999. The Pioneers compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, which they joined in 2024 after 25 seasons in the Northeast Conference, and have grown into a competitive D-I program.
The Pioneers name reflects the university's founding spirit as the first Catholic university in New England to be led by laypersons rather than clergy.
Winning the 1986 NCAA Division II national championship with a 93-87 victory over Southeast Missouri State, the crowning achievement in program history.
Sacred Heart is located in Fairfield, Connecticut, in affluent Fairfield County, giving it proximity to New York City recruiting and one of the wealthiest regions in the country.
