Coastal Carolina's basketball program began in 1963 in Conway, South Carolina. The Chanticleers compete in the Sun Belt Conference and have won multiple conference championships. The program moved to Division I in 1986 and has made several NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Chanticleers nickname comes from the proud rooster character Chauntecleer in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, making it one of the most literary mascots in college sports.
Winning the 1991 Big South Conference Tournament to earn the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance, a milestone for the young D-I program.
Coastal Carolina is the only school in Division I with the Chanticleer mascot, and the campus in Conway is located just minutes from the Myrtle Beach boardwalk.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers compete in the Sun Belt and hold an all-time record of 606–603 (.501 winning percentage) across 39 recorded seasons dating back to 1985-86.
