Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, competes in the Sun Belt Conference and has a passionate basketball fan base. The Thundering Herd won the 1947 NAIB Championship and have made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, most notably in 2018 under coach Dan D'Antoni, when they upset Wichita State for the program's first NCAA Tournament win.
The Thundering Herd nickname was inspired by a Zane Grey novel and represents the power and energy of a stampeding buffalo herd, first used by a sportswriter in 1925 and officially adopted by student vote in 1965.
Hal Greer's outstanding career at Marshall in the 1950s, which launched him to an NBA Hall of Fame career with the Philadelphia 76ers and Syracuse Nationals.
Hal Greer was the first Black athlete to play at Marshall and went on to become one of the greatest shooting guards in NBA history, with his number retired by the 76ers.
The Marshall Thundering Herd compete in the Sun Belt and hold an all-time record of 1527–1149 (.571 winning percentage) across 106 recorded seasons dating back to 1918-19.
